Mold Spores Mold growth

We’re all exposed to mold every day, but living or working in a moldy environment increases the likelihood of developing mold-related symptoms.

If you think a space you frequent is affected, it’s important to limit your exposure.

Limit exposure you say, how am I to do that when mold is found in every environment?  You may feel like you’re fighting a losing battle. With mold in so many places, indoors and out it can be challenging. You can take steps to limit your exposure indoors and make your home or business less mold-friendly. The key is to control the amount of moisture in the air. Mold is most frequently found in bathrooms, kitchens, attics and basements.

Follow these steps to help limit moisture in these areas:

  • Use an exhaust fan or open a window in the bathroom it will draw moisture up and out
  • Quick action can pay off! Fix leaky pipes, faucets or appliances right away
  • Lower the humidity in your basement by using a dehumidifier and choosing flooring that doesn’t hold moisture. Be careful what you store there. Mold will grow on old papers bedding and clothes. Use waterproof plastic containers instead of boxes whenever possible. Rake dead leaves from around the foundation of your home. Make sure as much as possible that rainwater drains away from your home. Clear out that drain at the bottom of your basement steps if it clogs water will run right in around the door flooding your basement.
  • Check roof gutters for proper drainage so waters isn’t leaking back into your attic area.
